Abstract
484,025. Handling pipes in wells. BYRON JACKSON CO. March 12, 1937, No. 7343. Convention date, Aug. 3, 1936. [Class 85] A well-pipe elevator comprises a body 1 and door 11 with semicircular openings and con-. nected by a pivot 13 on which the door is vertically movable, this movement being effected during opening or closing of the door by means of a cam 19 at the lower end of the body, the cam sloping outwardly and downwardly to co-operate with a truncated conical roller 25 on the door, the apex of the cone lying in the axis of the pin 13. The axis of the cone is placed as near as possible to the plane passing through the centre of gravity of the door and the axis of pin 13. AT-shaped latch 38 on the body is pressed by a coil spring 41 and co-operates with two pairs of lugs 43, 44, and 46, 47 on the door ; in closing the door, when the roller 25 passes over the high part 21 of the cam, an inclined surface 35 at the free end of the door is lifted over an inclined surface 36 on the body, and the latch engages lugs 43, 44 ; if a pipe collar is then supported on the door, the weight closes the door fully, and the latch engages lugs 46, 47. In this position, the weight of the door is supported by a flat surface 33, surfaces 35, 36, and also roller 25 and cam 19, preferably being out of contact. The pivot pin 13 and heel 49 of the door are so placed that a load applied to the elevator before the door has reached latching position would tilt the elevator away from the pipe. A rigid finger 50 on the door, adapted to be engaged by the pipe to close the door, is placed in line with the load-supporting surfaces of the link-engaging ears 5 and, when the door is closed, is received within a recess 52 so as to be clear of the load. Stops 51, 51a limit opening movement of the door and handles 52a, 53, are provided. The roller 25 and cam 19 may be interchanged in position.
