Abstract

862,411. Handling well tubing. WEB WILSON OIL TOOLS Inc. Aug. 27, 1959 [Feb. 18, 1959], No. 29371/59. Class 85. An elevator for handling well tubing comprises a pair of hinged body members which carry vertically slidable wedge-shaped slips and are closed around the pipe, and means extending above the body members to engage an upset portion of the tubing and force the slips rapidly into action so that the weight of the tubing string is never taken by the upset portion. The body members 1, 2 are hinged at 38, being closed by a spring 39 and handles 5, and are held closed by a latch 8. Slips 12, 13 are arranged in the semi-frusto, conical recess 3 in the member 1 and slips 14, 15, (15 not shown) are similarly arranged in the member 2, each slip being guided on rods 10 and urged by a spring 40 to the "release" position. The slips 12, 13 are connected by a horizontal pin 30 and the slips 14, 15 and 12 and 15 are similarly connected so that all the slips move vertically in unison. A U-shaped plate 16, having an adapter 17 for contacting with the upset portion of the tubing, rests upon plungers 26 in the tops of the slips, springs 28 tending to raise the plungers. The springs 40 are weaker than the springs 28, so that when, during the upward movement of the elevator on the tubing, the adapter 17 meets the upset portion, the plate 16 stops moving and holds the slips stationery. Continued raising of the elevator sets the slips on the tube in a wedging action. The plate 16 is mounted pivotally on an extension 19 of the hinge 38, and carries stops 45 to limit the opening of the hinged bodies 1, 2. A pin 44 extends downwardly into a recess between the members 1, 2 to align the tubing- receiving passages in the plate and between the slips, the slips being prevented from being gripped on the tube when the bodies 1, 2 ate closed, by a stop 32. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the plate 67 carrying the adapter 68 is not connected with the hinge, but is carried on spring-locating pins 73 screwed into the slips 65 carried by one of the hinged body members, the other edge of the plate being supported on washers 85 urged upwardly by springs 84 surrounding pins which secure the washers to the slips 63 carried by the other body member. When the body members are hingedly moved the plate 67 slides over the washers 85. The springs 80 bearing on the guide pins 61 are weaker than the springs 75, 84. Guide pins 60 engage holes in lugs 72 on the slips.
