Abstract

469,327. Handling pipe in wells. BYRON JACKSON CO. Jan. 22, 1936, No. 2070. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1935. [Class 85] Means for use in wells for handling pipe with a tapered external upset comprises a body 1 with an upper cylindrical bore 10 to receive the upper larger part of the upset and encircling the same more than 180‹, this bore merging into a lower tapered seat 15, the body also being provided with a door 18 and a latch. Below the seat 15, the bore may be cylindrical or flare outwardly. The seat 15 extends through about 120‹ and a complementary seat 18a in the door through 180‹. A spring 37 tends to hold the door open, and the door has upper and lower noses adapted to engage outside curved shoulders 23 on the body. A latch 27, pivoted to the body and pressed by a spring 33, is adapted to enter a slot 24 in the door and has a T-head with shoulders 31 adapted to engage door noses 25 to hold the door closed ; further noses 31a may act to hold the door slightly open. The door has a tongue 35 extending beyond the hinge pin 19, entering pipe engaging the tongue to close the door. The seat 18a in the door is so arranged relatively to the hinge pin 19 that resultant thrust from the pipe tends to keep the door closed.
