Class 138 (1) A wiper arm has a mounting socket 2 detachably secured to a shaft 3, a two-part arm 4, 6 pivoted at 5 to the socket and urged towards the windscreen by spring means, the part 6 being movable longitudinally with respect to the part 4 and normally held in position by a wedge member 9 connected to the spring means, wherein the spring means comprise an over-centre spring device including a coiled spring 13 connected at one end to the wedge member and at its other end to a curved member 12 pivoted on a pin 11 inwardly of the pivot 5. With this arrangement the arm can be moved to a position in which the spring passes through its dead-centre position and thereafter urges the arm away from the windscreen. The wedge 9 co-acts with a pin 8 secured between the side walls of the channelled arm part 4. The inner end of the strip arm part 6 may be upwardly bent to bear against the bottom of the section 4 so that as the length of the arm is increased the arm pressure against the windscreen is also increased in a similar manner to that described in Specification 641,526. When the arm is detached from the shaft 3 the spring 13 is only slightly stressed and the strip 6 may then be adjusted in the section 4.
