Abstract

235,813. Powell, A. D. Feb. 27, 1925. Jacks.-In lever jacks of the kind in which the range is increased by ratchet mechanism, pawls are provided which are normally kept in contact with the ratchet by gravity &c. and are disengaged at predetermined positions to permit lowering. The crutch supporting member 8 is connected to the frame 1 by parallel links 9, 5, the inner end of the latter of which is provided with a ratchet. The forked ends 6 of an operating handle 7 are freely mounted on the shaft 4 of the ratchet lever 5. A pawl 13 mounted on the handle and a pawl 16 mounted on the frame 1 are normally maintained in engagement with the ratchet by weighted arms 14, 17 respectively. A spring 25 connects an arm on the pawl 13 with a slidable frame 21 which can be moved towards one end of the handle against the resistance of a spring 23 by a handle 18. A rod 27 connected to the pawl 16 is slidably mounted in a trunnion 26 carried by the frame 24. A spring 28 is mounted on the rod between the trunnion 26 and a plate 29 adjustably mounted on the rod. A pin 30 limits the upward movement of the arm 14, and a pin 31 guides the pawl 13 into the teeth of the ratchet.
