Abstract
1405138 Calibration of aerosol stream UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 Aug 1973 [29 Aug 1972] 40084/72 Heading G1B An aerosol salt stream in ducting 2 for use in testing air filters is calibrated using an aerosol sample dilution circuit comprising sampling duct 4 having inlet 5 and two outlets 6, 7, means 8 for controlling the ratio of flow-rates in the outlets, means 10 for measuring the rate of flow through one of the outlets, a duct 11 from this outlet extending into a closed (entrainment) vessel 12, the other outlet (6) being for flow to waste, a duct 13 extending into vessel 12 for conveying compressed air at controllable pressure and flow-rate into the vessel and a duct 17 extending into the vessel for discharging a mixture of aerosol and air from the vessel, the compressed air duct and the discharge duct having their axes aligned Fig. 2 (not shown), the compressed air duct having a restricted orifice to cause an increase in the velocity of the air issuing from the orifice and entrainment of the aerosol sample in the air-stream and the orifices of the discharge duct and the restricted orifices being spaced so apart that the discharge stream flows out of the vessel through the discharge duct without turbulence. The discharge duct orifice in the vessel may have an enlarged diameter. The dilution circuit may have a second sample entrainment vessel, 20, and a controlled flow of the discharge stream from vessel 12 is entrained in a second compressed air stream within vessel 20 for discharge by line 29.
