Abstract
1,018,059. Spray-producers. WALL COLMONOY CORPORATION. Sept. 21, 1964 [Jan. 3, 1964], No. 38472/64. Heading B2F. In an apparatus for spraying a coating powder entrained in a stream of mixed gas and atomized binder liquid, powder fed to the stream is delayed by a "sensing" device in the gas path of the stream until the composition of the stream is such as will effect the desired coating with the particular powder employed. In the apparatus shown, the liquid is sucked from a container 12, Fig. 1, by an air stream entering a spray gun 10 through a pipe 30 whilst the powder drops from a container 42 and is entrained in an air stream passing along a path comprising pipes 38 and 44. The air used in the apparatus is conducted from a compressed source and passes to a junction 22 through a valve 16, filter 18 and adjustable pressure reducer 20. From the junction the air passes in two paths to the gun nozzle assembly the air for atomization of the liquid passing to an annular orifice 74 in the nozzle assembly through a part 26, Figs. 1 and 4, of the "sensing" device, the pipe 30, a gun handle tube 62, Fig. 2, a spring-loaded trigger actuated valve 52, a gun duct 68, an annular space 70 and parallel connected tubes 72. Actuation of the trigger 50 to open the valve 52 withdraws a needle valve 54 from an orifice 60 which is surrounded by the annular orifice 74 thus allowing the air issuing through the orifice 74 to aspirate the liquid in the container 12. The air stream which entrains the powder dropping from the container 42 issues into a base compartment 122, Fig. 5, through a nozzle 114 after passing from the junction 22 through an adjustable pressure reducer 34, a part 36, Fig. 4, of the "sensing" device and the pipe 38. This air flow is delayed after actuation of the gun trigger 50 until the "sensing" device opens a spring-loaded diaphragm controlled valve 104 in the device part 36. Such opening is only effected when the liquid atomizing air flow through the "sensing" part 26, Fig. 4, is such that pressure differential is brought into play upon both sides of the diaphragm 96 controlling the valve 104 to cause the diaphragm to move to the left and thus withdraw the valve 104 from its seating 108. The entrained powder is fed from the container 42, Fig. 5, through a tube 116 and pipe 44 to an orifice 48 forming part of the gun nozzle assembly and located such that the powder is discharged into the issuing air and atomized liquid mixture. The gun nozzle assembly also includes side orifices 76, Fig. 3, for shaping the air and liquid spray. The top of the container 42 is in communication with the pipe 44 through a connection 124, Fig. 5. Articles coated by the apparatus are subsequently heated to volatilize the liquid binder.
