Coke ovens.-In a regenerative oven, air is supplied continuouslyto burners arranged at the top of the heating-wall, and the waste gases are exhausted from one or other end of a collecting-flue at the bottom, according to the position of a reversing-valve mechanism. Two regenerative chambers 29, 30 are arranged longitudinally beneath each oven, and are connected at one end to tunnels 31, 32, and at the other to flues 47, each of which can be put into communication, according to the position of the valves 45, 49, with either a downtake 20 leading from a waste gas collecting-flue 18 beneath the sole of the oven. or with a flue 51 leading to an uptake in communication with a recuperator wall 13 between the, heating-walls 10, 11 of adjacent ovens. In the position shown of the valves, air is supplied to the tunnel 31 and passes through the regenerator 29 and left-hand flue 47, past the valve 49, and through the connexion 51 and the uptake to the recuperator wall. The waste gases from the flue 18 descend through the right-hand downtake 20, and flow past the valve 45 through the connexion 47 and regenerator 30 to the tunnel 32. The two tunnels are connected at one end through reversing devices with a stack and a source of air supply. At the upper end of the recuperator wall the air passes through damper-controlled ports to a mixing-flue 21 supplied with gas through ports 22, and the mixture descends through damper-controlled ports 24 to the two heating-walls on opposite sides of the recuperator wall. Direct flow of air through the regenerator chambers is prevented by baffles 53, 54, 55.
