Gaseous-fuel furnaces.-In a coke oven having a network of interconnected passages formed in the heating-walls, combustion chambers are provided in the upper portion of the heating-walls, and into each delivers a gas nozzle situated between two air ports arranged so that the stream of gas is surrounded by an envelope of air. The gas is delivered to combustion chambers 34 through nozzles 25, while the air is supplied from recuperators through vertical conduits 36 to longitudinal chambers 32 in communication with the combustion chambers 34 through damper-controlled ports 33. A portion only of the gas for combustion is supplied through the nozzles 25, and the remainder is delivered through slits 73 lower down the walls.
