Abstract

1357732 Boats supported on floats W L WILLIAMS 10 June 1971 [11 March 1970] 11780/70 Headings B7A and B7V A sailing craft has a base frame 1 supported by floats such as 2, 4P, 4S attached in a symmetrical polygonal arrangement with respect to a fore-and-aft axis 3. Each float has a pair of leading surfaces such as 6P, 7P inclined and oriented to perform different functions according to which of two directions offset from the fore-and-aft axis the craft is sailed. One surface of a pair is adapted to create lift when the craft is sailed in one direction while the other creates lift when the craft is sailed in the other direction. Said one surface is aligned with said other direction when the craft is sailing in said other direction and said other surface is aligned with said one direction when the craft is sailing in said one direction. In the embodiment of Figs. 4(a) and 4(b) leeboard 21 is freely hinged to the stern of bow float 18, so that it can swing between positions in which it abuts the inboard side of either the port float 20P or starboard float 20S.
