Abstract

1,039,592. Directional control of dynamically supported hulls. W. GRAIG. March 3, 1964, No. 8938/64. Headings B7A and B7V. A device for the directional control of watercraft supported by dynamic forces on sustentation means (e.g. hydrofoils, skis, planing bottoms) comprises partially immersed movable hydrodynamic elements on each side of the craft, the vertical positions of the elements and/or the angle of attack being differentially varied by control means actuated by the pilot to produce a rolling moment causing a bank allowing a turning to be achieved, said elements being so connected to the hull that the bank tends to compensate the difference between the port and starboard left forces so that the rolling moment vanishes and the craft is stabilized at the bank angle preselected by the control setting. In one embodiment (Figs. 1-3, not shown) the movable hydrodynamic elements are hydrofoils 2, 3 rotatable differentially about transverse shafts 4, 5. In another embodiment (Figs. 10-12, not shown) the elements are provided by the bottoms 32, 33 attached to the hull 31 by an articulated quadrilateral. Another embodiment (Fig. 13, not shown) has frontal skis 50 forming the movable hydrodynamic elements.
