Abstract

1,242,137. Reducing resistance to ships; steering ships. WARTSILA A.B. OY. 8 Nov., 1968 [11 Nov., 1967], No. 53019/68. Headings B7M and B7V. A ship 1 has underwater openings 3 along both sides below the waterline 2 and means for exhausting air through the openings. The dimensions and number of the openings and the output of the exhausting air are such that air can be blown as bubbles 4 through the openings at a rate sufficient to cause upwardly directed flows of water along each side of the ship which create ridges 5 of water on the water surface along the sides of the ship and thus generate water flows which move sideways out from the sides. In the embodiment shown the openings are provided in the bow part of the ship. Blowing of the air through the openings at different pressures on each side can be used as an auxiliary method of steering the ship.
