A ship (in Fig. 4 the forward load-carrying section 20 into which the stern power unit section 21 is plugged at 23<SP>1</SP>) comprises a hull having a double shell 1, 2 in which there are provided water tunnels 3 (30 in Fig. 4) extending from bow to stern at each side, the lower tunnels having water propulsion means 13 by which the ship can be moved forwards, astern or sideways, and the upper tunnels having valve gates 16 for admitting and evacuating water ballast and means for blowing the tunnels to evacuate the water. The said propulsion means may be in addition to the normal ship's propellers.
