Abstract

1350208 Inflatable boats; ballasting; stepped planing hulls G S GALT 31 Jan 1972 [30 Oct 1970 30 Nov 1970] 51765/70 and 56784/70 Headings B7A B7M and B7S A boat, e.g. of the type comprising buoyant side tubes 1, 2, a deck 4 and a transom 5, is provided with a floodable ballast space 9 enclosed by the deck 4 and the bottom of the hull 6. A water inlet 10 to the space 9 is located in the transom 5 so that water in the space runs out as the bow of the boat rises with increase of speed. An air-vent (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided at the forward end of the space 9. As described, two sealed air compartments 13, 14 are placed aft in the space 9 and a selectively fillable water container (16), Fig. 1, not shown, is placed forward. The means of attachment of the V-bottom hull 6 to the side tube 1, 2 is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown). A fillet (6A) integral with the hull being located by strips (6, 6A, 6B, 6C) of the same material as the tubes 1, 2 and glued thereto. The deck 4 which may be of plywood sheet enclosed between glass-fibre reinforced plastics sheeting is located by the upper of two spray strakes 7, 8 formed in the hull 6 which may be of glass-fibre reinforced plastics, light alloy sheet or wooden sheet. The V-shaped hull 6 may be provided with a step (not shown), the region aft of the step being closed at the sides by a strake and being in communication with the floodable space 9 via ports in the vertical wall of the step and/or in the hull bottom aft of the step.
