Abstract

1304669 Erecting carton blanks SCHWEIZERISCHE ESTDUSTRIE-GESELLSCHAFT 5 Jan 1972 [6 Jan 1971] 414/72 Heading B5D Apparatus for setting up the lowermost carton blank 40, from a stack 41 received between vertical pillars 42 comprises a suction piston 54 which is vertically reciprocable between guide plates 49-52 to erect the blank. The upper face of the piston 54 comprises an outer continuous rib 56 defining an outer suction chamber 60 and an inner rib 57 having openings 58 and defining an inner suction chamber 59 in communication with a vacuum line through the hollow piston rod 55. The piston 54 has depending arms 66 on which are mounted spindles 65 carrying grippers 67 having claws 68, and arms 64 bearing rollers 63 which are displaceable in grooves 62<SP>1</SP> of a control piston 61 which is reciprocable parallel to the suction piston 54. At the beginning of the downward stroke, the greater speed of the control piston 61 pivots the grippers 67 so that the claws 68 engage the base of the blank through slots 21. Towards the end of the downward stroke, the speed of the control piston 61 is less than that of the suction piston 54 to release the grippers from the carton The guide plates 49-52 are each curved convexly inwardly at their upper ends and define together a rectangular shoot 53 at their lower ends adapted to erect the side walls 4, 5 of the carton. The guide plates also have edge strips 51a and projections 50a adapted to erect the corner flaps 25 of the carton to lie inside the walls 5 and the corner flaps 14 and tongues 26 of the carton to lie inside the walls 4 and 5 respectively with the tongues 26 passing through slits 15 in the corner flaps 14. The corner flaps 14 are subjected to a bending stress opening the slits 15, 17 by passing over the edges 70a of stops 69a on a table 43 on which the stack 41 rests.
