The guide rails 12, (13) which have channels for receiving the edges of a blank, may be displaceable either in the axial direction of the core tool or laterally. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the rails 12, (13) are displaced in said axial direction by a stripper plate (41b), Fig. 4a (not shown), which is movable with the core tool. The rails may be stepped as shown in Fig. 5 to position the blank. In alternative arrangements the blank is positioned by one or more stops and by moving the guide rails towards one another, either by pivoting the or each rail about its lower region or by moving the or each rail laterally. In a further arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the blank is positioned by a stop (12<SP>1</SP>) and solenoids (12d, 13d) which can engage the blank side edges. The guide rails include cut-away portions 12e, 13e on the sides remote from the cavity tool. In a multi-impression form of the apparatus, adjacent edges of adjacent blanks may be guided in common guide rails, Fig. 7 (not shown), of substantially S cross-section. The cavity tool comprises a split tool whose parts 14, 15 are mounted in a base tool 16 for movement towards one another as the split tool is moved into the base tool by engagement with a stripping ring 41 on the core tool during closing movement of the latter. The core tool may have vacuum openings in its leading face or retractable projections on said face for engaging and holding the base panel of the blank. The juxtaposed edges of the folded blank are seamed by thermoplastic material injected into channels running adjacent siad juxtaposed edges while the folded blank is held in a cavity between the core tool, split tool and base tool.
