Abstract

1,267,550. Making boxes. GENERAL NAILING MACHINE CORP. 27 Aug., 1969 [5 Sept., 1968], No. 42759/69. Heading BSD. A carton having a base panel 46, Fig. 9, and two side panels 47, 48 hinged thereto has the two remaining sides formed of separate end panels secured to the panels 46, 47, 48 by glue flaps 46f, 47f, 48f. The panels are assembled by a plunger and die, the plunger moving horizontally. The blanks comprising the panels 46, 47, 48 are stacked vertically in a magazine above the plunger 78 and die 79, teeth 41 on a finger 39 feed each blank to rolls 44, 45 that pass the blank down to a position between the plunger and die. Flaps 46f, 47f, and 48f pass a glue applying roller as they move downwardly. The separate end panels 105, Fig. 9, are fed from two magazines, one on each side of the die and plunger. As each blank is fed downwardly it trips a plate 166 and withdraws a catch 175 so that the plunger is free to move into the die. As the plunger moves into the die, panels 46, 47, 48 are folded to U-shape and pickoff plates 107 on the trailing end of the plunger feeds an end panel 105 into each open end of the U-shaped panels 46, 47, 48. Members 110, 111 assisting initial folding of panels 47, 48 and deflectors 181 fold flaps 46f. Presser plates 119 are moved towards the folded blank and end panels and press the carton on to the plunger until the glue has set. A rock shaft 115 moves the plates 119. Movement of the plates 119, of the plunger into the die, and the feed of the blank comprising panels 46, 47, 48 are controlled by linkages from cams on a shaft 98 driven from an electric motor and by chain and sprocket gearing. An adjustable time delay is included in the electric control circuit. A quick setting hot glue is used to enable the machine to operate at high speed. If the output is to be reduced it is not feasible to run the machine more slowly since this would necessitate changing to a slower-setting glue. This problem is overcome by running the machine at its usual high speed but interrupting the cycle for a predetermined period of time. Springs 184 press on the top and bottom sides of a formed carton to bow those sides inwardly, the carton being ejected as the next blank is folded in the die and engages the inwardly bowed sides.
