128,507. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Air Reduction Co.). Jan. 6, 1919. Alkali cyanides.-The extraction of cyanide from a furnace product obtained by nitrogenizing a mixture of alkali carbonate and carbon, with or without a catalyst, for instance a mixture of sodium carbonate, coke, and iron or iron oxide, is effected by a composite solvent consisting of a mixture of water with an organic solvent miscible therewith, such as methyl or ethyl alcohol or acetone. Any alkali oxide or hydroxide in the furnace product may be removed by treatment of the wetted product with carbonic acid or by passing carbonic acid through the solution before or after it is separated from the residue. The residue, with suitable additions to make up its composition, may be used again.
