Carbon.-Consists in subjecting wood charcoal to a partial vacuum, impregnating with alkali, caustic or carbonated, heating to a high temperature such as a bright red heat and extracting the alkali. In an example, wood charcoal is subjected for half an hour at 20‹ C. to a vacuum of 720 mm. of mercury and then impregnated with a solution of potassium carbonate.
