Abstract
In the purification of commercial benzol by an oxidizing gas e.g. air or oxygen, a pressure of several atmospheres is maintained, and preferably alkali is present. In an example a benzol of 0.8798 S.G. is treated for 4 hours at 80 DEG C. with half its volume of normal caustic soda and with oxygen under a pressure of 200 lb. Further treatment at 185 DEG C. and higher pressure reduces the sulphur content and bromine value much further. Preferably the air or oxygen is blown through the benzol and circuited for reuse.
