Abstract
125,946. Christiansen, J. A. April 20, 1918, [Convention date]. Methyl alcohol is obtained by reducing an alkyl formate by hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, such as copper; methyl formate is a suitable parent substance. Methyl formate for use in the process may be made by reaction of carbon monoxide with methyl alcohol under pressure in the presence of sodium methylate, or by passing carbon monoxide into a solution of sodium methylate or methyl alcohol. By combining the processes above-described, methyl formate or methyl alcohol can be obtained from the constituents of water-gas.
