Abstract

1,244,119. Caps for bottles. C. M. B. ANDERSEN. 25 July, 1969 [29 July, 1968; 6 May, 1969], No. 37423/69. Heading B8T. A closure device 5 for a screw or bayonet jointed cap has at least one locking or coupling device movable under the influence of gravitation between two alternative positions one in which the closure is locked and the other in which it is free to be removed. The coupling device may be a ball 10 in a channel 9 or may be a pin (28), Fig. 7 (not shown), in a recess (27). In the locking position, the ball may engage under an annular rib 2 on the container 1, in an axial groove (90) in the annular bead (4), Fig. 4 (not shown), or in an axial groove in the thread 3. To release the locking device the container is inverted, so that the ball 10 runs to the opposite end of the channel 9. A second locking device, a ball 12 in a channel 11 or a pin (34) in a recess (32), Fig. 7 (not shown), in this case in the container, may be incorporated to allow only a limited rotation of the cap while the container is inverted and thereby maintain the seal formed by the expanding gasket 8. In this case, on placing the container upright again the ball 12 runs back in the channel 11 to free the closure which has already been turned sufficiently to prevent the ball 10 sealing under the rib 2 and the cap can be removed freely. The channels 9 and 11 may be joined (13), Fig. 6 (not shown), so that one ball may perform both locking movements. The channels may be formed by the arms (81) of a single tube, Fig. 3 (not shown), each crimped at its free end to prevent the ball dropping out. The locking device may be incorporated in an annular locking sleeve (70), Fig. 2 (not shown), which holds the cap 5 by means of coacting annular flanges (73) and (75) on the sleeve and cap respectively.
