Abstract

1,168,465. Tapping containers; boxes. C. H. MALPAS. 14 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965; 21 Feb., 1966], No. 50987/66. Headings B8P and B8T. A box, can &c. comprises an outer casing, an inner flexible bag, a tap socket member connecting the two and a tap for introduction into the socket member. In one form, a box 11, Fig. 2, contains a flexible bag 13 and at the bottom of one side wall of the box a socket 14 having a tubular body 16 is passed through holes in the box and bag. A grooved ring 22 is forced over a beaded inner end 17 of the socket 14, and clamps the bag to the socket, presenting a tight diaphragm across the end of the tubular body 16. An eccentric lobe 15 of the socket 14 enters an offset hole in the wall of the box 11, to hold the socket against rotation. To tap the box, a stopper 21 is first removed from the outer end of the socket 14. A tap 27, Fig. 4, of tubular shape is then forced through the socket 14 so that its inner pointed end 44 ruptures the diaphragm presented by the stretched and clamped bag wall. Liquid in the bag 13 passes through holes 45 into the tap, which contains a rotary valve cylinder 46 turnable by a knob 50 to align a port 48 with a dispensing spout 41, as shown. The outer end of the socket 14 has a non-circular recess 20 engaged by a correspondingly shaped flange 42 around the tap 27, to hold the latter against rotation within the socket. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the eccentric lobe 15 is replaced by a square cross-sectioned flange (16a) engaged in a hole through the box wall. In another modification, a tubular plug (24), Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), extending through the bag and the box wall, is engaged externally by a socket 25 having a separate end cap.
