Abstract

[Also in Divisions G1 and G3] In an electroslag welding process the speed of advance of the welding shoes 13, 14 is controlled by an eddy-current liquid level detector (30), Fig. 2 (not shown), from which the output signal controls a lifting motor 18 driving a gear 19 along rack 20 (see Division G1). The slag depth, 60, is maintained constant by an automatic level control (see Division G3) in which a flux hopper flap 66 is controlled by an electromagnet 64, 65 operated by a relay 62, 62a in accordance with signals from a conductivity probe 61 Should the level of the conductive slag fall below the probe tip the flap is operated to restore it. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a similar eddy current detector, 70, is mounted in the wall 71 of a crucible 72. Powder, 80, for the Thermit welding process is placed in the crucible and ignition powder 81 placed on top of it. When the level of the molten metal reaches that of the detector a tapping pin 74 is operated to allow the metal to pass through a gate 75 into a mould 76. The mould contains a section 77 to be joined to another. It is stated that the detector may be applied to electrogas welding.
