Abstract

1,182,847. Axial-flow fans. PAPSTMOTOREN K. G. Aug. 22, 1968 [Aug. 23, 1967], No.40249/68. Heading F1C. A fan driven by an electric motor comprises a frame with an aperture of circular cross-section for the passage of air and at least one spoke supporting the motor, a guide wall of the frame surrounding the air stream, and an impeller within the aperture and having blades projecting upstream of the guide wall axially beyond the guide wall and outside the guide wall in a radial direction freely beyond the diameter of the aperture. The fan shown in Fig. 2 comprises impeller blades 11 carried by the external rotor 10 of the electric driving motor, the motor stator 8 being supported by spokes 6. A frame 3 of square external shape has a circular opening forming a guide wall 3a surrounding the impeller. As shown, the impeller blades 11 extend beyond the frame 3 in an upstream direction, with a maximum diameter 7% greater than the diameter of the circular opening of the frame 3. As shown by arrows, air enters the impeller not only along the front edges of the blades 11 but also along the outer edges 12, whereby 30% more air is drawn into the fan. The impeller blades 11 also extend beyond the frame 3 in a downstream direction and this extension may also have a maximum diameter greater the diameter of the opening in the frame 3. In this case, to enable the impeller to be inserted through the opening, the impeller blades may be made of resilient synthetic material so that they can be deformed during the insertion. Alternatively, the frame 3 may be made in two parts, or the downstream part of the impeller may be a separate member carrying separate blades (19, Fig. 8, not shown), or extensions 20, Fig. 9, may be fastened to the blades 11 either at the downstream end as shown or at the upstream end. The extensions may also be used for balancing the impeller. The guide wall 3a may be continued by a funnel-shaped ring 3b, with rings 3c to subdivide the flow. The leading edge of each blade 11 may be inclined backwardly or forwardly in relation to a radial plane through the impeller axis. The motor may be reversed in position, with the supporting spokes 6 at the inlet end of the fan.
