Abstract
1,171,01. Axial-flow fans. ROTRON Inc. Jan.2, 1967 [March 28, 1966], No.124/67. Heading F1C. In an encased axial-flow fan, the blades 55 and/ or the flow path 51 within the casing 54a are shaped to impart to the air a radially outward component of flow greater than that due to the centrifugal effect of rotation of the flow. Moreover, the internal surface 53 of the casing has a discontinuity substantially level with the downstream ends of the blades so that the flow path 51 opens suddenly into an unobstructed zone extending radially outwards and downstream of the flow path, to allow the air leaving the flow path to develop freely the flow patterns it contains. Thus, as shown, spirals 72, 73 of discharged air can flow freely within the theoretical envelope formed by rotating the line 10 about the rotational axis. The radially outer edge of each blade follows closely the contour of the internal surface 53. A mounting ring 69 can be connected to a wall as shown or to a duct. The ring 69 may be omitted, the air leaving the flow path then discharging directly into the ambient. A preswirler may be arranged in the inlet. An electric driving motor is mounted in the rotor hub 52 which is supported by the casing through spider arms 56. The hub 52 and internal surface 53 may both diverge in the direction of flow to form a flow passage of substantially constant cross-sectional area, the angle of divergence of the internal surface being between 10 and 20 degrees. Alternatively the hub, or the hub and internal surface, may be cylindrical. Each fan blade has a generally transversely concave leading surface 61 with its trailing end curved sharply forwardly of the surface in the direction of air-flow. The radially outer portion of the blade, generally over about one-third of its radial length, is inclined rearwardly by an increasing amount from the leading end to the trailing end. The trailing end is inclined rearwardly over most of its radial length, e.g. by 30 degrees at its radially outer portion.
