Abstract

1,105,320. Centrifugal fans. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 30, 1965 [Aug. 25, 1964], No.34831/64. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F4] In a centrifugal fan for a heating and/or ventilating apparatus for a vehicle, comprising an inlet duct adapted to be positioned so that forward motion of the vehicle causes air to be forced into the inlet of the volute casing of the fan, each fan blade has its outermost portion directed in a radial or near radial direction, the remaining portion being generally inclined at a substantial angle to the outermost portion, and the innermost portion leading the outermost portion in the direction of rotation. With this arrangement a change in the static pressure against which the fan works from a positive value when the vehicle is stationary to a negative value at a high forward speed of the vehicle does not change significantly the power required to drive the fan. The front shroud of the fan impeller is of frusto-conical form so that the area of the flow path through the impeller is constant over the whole radial length of the blades. The driving motor is of either permanent magnet or shunt-wound type.
