A retainer for yarn balls on a hollow dyeing spindle 2 comprises a bush 5 with a ball 8 urged against the spindle end 3 by a coaxial bush 4 having a cam surface 19, and under the influence of a spring 11. A lever 15 depresses the outer bush relative to the inner to release the grip for changing the balls of yarn.
