793,291. Winding yarns. CELANESE CORPORATION OF AMERICA. May 11, 1956 [May 11, 1955], No. 14709/56. Class 120(2) [Also in Group XVI] A mandrel for carrying a yarn package support comprises a member having surfaces extending along and inclined to the axis of an arbor on which it is mounted for free rotation, bars tapered to match the inclination of the surfaces mounted thereon for longitudinal movement in contact therewith, the bars having outer surfaces adapted to engage the inside of the package support, and means for moving the bars along the surfaces to cause outward movement of the bars into operative engagement with the inside of the tube. Bars 19 are pressed against inclined surfaces 21 on a barrel 13 mounted on an arbor 14 by grease-seal bearings 16, 17 by means of coil springs 28 encircling the barrel 13 and bars 19. Screws 20 prevent the bars 19 from leaving the grooves 18, Fig. 6. A pin 34 on each bar 19 passes through an aperture in the barrel 13 and into apertures 37 in a ring 38 mounted in a groove 39 of a sleeve 40 slidably mounted in thebarrel 13, and having a groove 41 to receive the ends of the bars 19. The sleeve 40 is normally urged to a position in which the mandrel 12 is expanded to hold a package support 11 by coil springs 42 between the sleeve and the barrel. The mandrel 12 is contracted by means of a threaded nut 44 with a handle 46 mounted on a threaded portion 47 of the arbor 14. A portion of the nut 44 is received within the sleeve 40 while a flange 48 of the nut 44 is faced with friction material 49. When the mandrel is suspended as in Fig. 5, movement of the handle 46 brings the facing 49 in contact with the sleeve 40 and stops the rotation of the mandrel. Further movement of the handle 46 moves the sleeve 40 against the action of the springs 42 and moves the bars 19 to the contracted position.
