738,604. Winding yarn. RUSHTON, G. W. May 3, 1954 [Feb. 3, 1953], No. 2983/53. Class 120(2). A winding machine yarn-package holding mandrel comprises a control rod A having a fixed disc B<SP>1</SP> with a conical surface b<SP>2</SP> and a sliding disc B<SP>2</SP>, also formed with a conical surface b<SP>2</SP>, a spring C operating through sleeves D and E to separate them to' their maximum distance apart, so that radial sections A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>, formed with conical internal surfaces a<SP>2</SP> bearing upon the surfaces b<SP>2</SP>, may be maintained in their expanded condition against the force of circumferential springs b contained in grooves a<SP>1</SP> in the sections A<SP>1</SP>, A<SP>2</SP>, A<SP>3</SP>. In the expanded condition, balls d, housed in a groove in the rod A engage within the sleeve E which is spring- biassed at d<SP>1</SP>. The mandrel is contracted by a tool G taking over an end a of the rod A and furnished with a portion g to force back the arms e of the sleeve E to allow the disc B<SP>2</SP> to move inwardly, a bayonet slot g<SP>2</SP>, which may be engaged with an end-stop a<SP>3</SP> on the rod A, enabling the mandrel to be maintained contracted for doffing purposes.
