[Also in Division F2] A core, Figs. 2 and 3, on which filaments 18 can be wound comprises a central shaft (14), a bush (15) secured to the central shaft (14), a sleeve (8) slideable along and guided by the bush (15), a handle (7) attached to the sleeve for manual movement thereof, wedges (10) disposed circumferentially about the sleeve (8) and having oblique surfaces (13) inclined to the direction of movement of the sleeve along the bush and engageable by pins (9) fixed to the sleeve (8), shoes (11) also disposed circumferentially about the sleeve (8) in alternate relation to the wedges (10), and end members (16) secured to the central shaft (14) and having radial slots (17) Fig. 4 (not shown) for guiding the shoes (11). The end members (16) also serve to limit the amount of movement of the sleeve (8) along the bush (15). Ring-shaped resilient members (12) urge the shoes radially inwards. The arrangement is such that when the sleeve (8) is moved along the bush (15) into one end position the pins (9) cooperate withthe oblique surfaces (13) to move the wedges (10) radially outwards and thereby move the shoes (11) radially outwards to positions where the outer surfaces of the wedges (10) and the shoes (11) together form a continuous cylindrical surface on which a cake of filament can be wound, and when the sleeve (8) is moved along the bush (15) towards the other end position the shoes (11) are permitted to be moved radially inwards by the ring-shaped resilient members (12) whereby the cake can be doffed.
