Abstract

A bobbin cradle of the kind in which a pair of arms 1 pivot about an axle 4 such that a take-up tube 6 or package thereon, is applied against a driving cylinder 8, under the action of at least the weight of the tube and any yarn thereon, includes spring means 81 that is so arranged as to produce a torque that is dependent upon the setting of the pivoted arms; namely one in which the torque is such that the arms are intially biased towards the driving cylinder 8 but as the package grows said torque is gradually reduced to zero and then caused to increase again but in the opposite direction to compensate at least for the increase in weight of the bobbin. A cam 62, clamped to the stationary axle 4, has an undulating surface against which a pivoted finger 76 is pressed by a spring 81. When spooling begins the arms are in the position illustrated and the pivoted finger 76 is located on a first portion 62a of the cam, this first portion sloping in a direction causing the arms to be biased towards the cylinder 8. When the bobbin has reached a certain diameter the finger 76 passes onto the apex 62b so that no swivelling torque is exerted on the arms and the bobbin is thus applied against the driving cylinder under the action of its own weight and the weight of the swivelling assembly. As the spooling proceeds, the pivoted finger 76 reaches the portion 62c of the cam so that a torque is created via the spring 81 in a direction opposite to that created by the weight of the spool and the swivelling assembly. When the pivoted finger 76 reaches the hollow d of the cam the spooling is completed and the lever 1 can be manually raised to the position 1b at which it is locked elastically by the finger 76 as it enters the hollow 62f of the cam. One of the pair of arms is biased towards the other so that a spool can be releasably inserted between said arms. The lever 1 is an extension of said biased arm.
