A bobbin carrier for .a braiding machine has a pawl and ratchet arrangement for releasing the bobbin or preventing its rotation depending on the tension exerted on the thread. The carrier comprises a base 11 supporting a spindle 20 carrying a bobbin 15 the base of which has attached to it a ratchet wheel 23. A pawl 30 is adapted to engage, with its projection 32, with the wheel 23 to prevent rotation of the bobbin. A guide tube 34 is also mounted on the base 11 and has secured at one end a guide roller 39 and guide eye 17 whilst also slidably supporting a guide roller 46. Thread from the bobbin is guided around a stationary roller 36 and thence round roller 39 and roller 46 to be eventually delivered through aperture 17. The roller 46 is secured to a block 50 slidable on a shaft 51 within the tube 34 against the action of a spring 60. The shaft 51 has a stop nut which when engaged by the block 50, as the result of yarn tension moving roller 46 causes the shaft 51 to move axially so that a block 54 secured to its end is caused to move along the tube 34. A cam member 59 connected to the block 54 is thereby likewise moved when stop 52 is engaged by block 50 and moved against the action of spring 58 and in doing so acts on an arm 33 of the pawl 30 to cause it to disengage the position from the ratchet 23, thereby permitting the thread to be withdrawn from the bobbin as the bobbin rotates. The tension imposed by the spring 60 can be varied by adjusting an end plug 61 on the tube 34 against which the spring abuts. The ultimate tension in the yarn can be determined by varying the position of the stop nut 52 on the shaft 51.
