June 5, 1917 Folding edges of sheet material.-In the manufacture of cotton-wool plugs for surgical and dental use, a continuous flat band of cotton wool is folded or curled into the form of a cylindrical roll, which is treated and cut to form the plugs. The apparatus employed is shown in Fig. 1 and comprises a spool 12 for the flat band 11, guiding and feeding rollers 13, 14, a former-tube 15 for folding down one edge of the band, compression rollers 17, 18, a former-tube 19 of varying cross-section (as shown in Fig. 2) serving progressively to fold or curl the band 11, a conduit 22 wherein the roll 21 produced by the former-tubes is coated with liquid adhesive, a drying-chamber 32, and measuring, propelling, and cutting mechanism.
