885,438. Producing tearing means on wrapping material. NIEPMANN, F., NIEPMANN, 0., and NIEPMANN, F., [trading as MASCHINENFABRIK F. NIEPMANN & CO.]. Dec. 30, 1959 [Dec. 31, 1958], No. 44245/59. Class 73 [Also in Group XVI] Tearing means on wrapping material is formed by providing a single or, as shown, a double Z-shaped fold 2, Fig. 1, to form two tearing edges 2b, 2c, the overlapping surfaces of the fold being secured together by heat sealing or adhesive. The wrapping material 1, Fig. 3, is drawn between a base plate 4 and a guide block 6 provided on its underface with a recess 8, Fig. 5, which, because of its conical formation, forms a deepened guide channel terminating at its outlet end in substantially circular form. A wire or rod 5 is located within the recess 8 and lies axially thereof. The material 1 is guided over the wire 5 to form a substantially circular bead along the centre of the strip, which is then drawn over a sharp edge 4a of the base plate 4 and between rollers 9, 10 to produce the double-Z fold. It is then drawn between two heatsealing jaws 11, 12 to make the fold permanent. A coloured layer may be applied wholly or partially in the fold.
