Abstract

1,199,029. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG. CO. 6 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 56649/67. Heading B5K. Rubber sheets 1, 2 to be bonded are fed from rolls 3, 4 to a pair of heated platens 8, 9 located one above the other with the edges overlapping at the bonding position, the platen 8 being movable vertically in synchronism with the movement of the sheets 1, 2 so that a continuous bond is formed between the sheets as their overlapped edges pass between the platens 8, 9. In the embodiment shown, the sheets 1, 2 are moved intermittently but, alternatively, they may be fed continuously. A tie gum tape 6 from a roll 7 may be interposed between the overlapping sheet edges. The bonded sheets are wound on a roll 11. The rubber may be a low unsaturation rubber, e.g. butyl rubber or ethylene-propylene rubber. Preferably, the rubber sheets are vulcanized prior to bonding.
