Abstract

740,811. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 12, 1953 [Aug. 13, 1952], No. 20341/52. Class 42 (1). [Also in Group XVII] In a process for forming transverse seams between two or more continuous, superimposed layers of thermoplastic film by passing them from a feed roller or rollers over a supporting plate or drum to a take-off roller or the like and bringing a heated seaming member, protected by a separating barrier, into contact with the film above the plate or drum and holding it there until the layers are seamed together across their width, at least one securing member is brought into contact with the film close to the seaming region, and on each side thereof, before the heat-sealing member is withdrawn from contact with the film, and is withdrawn from contact with the film after the heat-sealing member has been withdrawn, the seaming member or members being at a temperature below the heat-sealing temperature of the film. As shown, flattened tubular film 1 passes from a feed roller 2 to take-off rollers 3 over a supporting metal plate 4 surfaced with resilient silicone rubber 7. The feed of the film is interrupted at set intervals, and an electricallyheated metal sealing strip 5 and a securing member 6 are brought down simultaneously, under spring loading, to press the film against plate 4. The edge of strip 5 is coated with polytetrafluorethylene to form a separating barrier. Member 6 extends on each side of strip 5 across the width of the film and is preferably water-cooled. When a heat-seal has been formed, strip 5 and member 6 are raised successively and the film advanced for the next seal. In an alternative arrangement, plate 4 is replaced by a continuously revolving drum, surfaced with silicone rubber, around a part of whose circumference the film passes. The sealing and securing members are adapted to press the film on to the drum surface, to travel for a short distance with the drum to seal the film, to be raised in succession and to be returned to their initial positions for the next sealing cycle. For sealing polythene film, a sealing-strip temperature of 180‹ C. is used and the sealing and securirig members contact the film for 0.5 and 0.8 seconds respectively.
