Abstract

712,191. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Aug. 13, 1952 [Sept. 5, 1951], No. 20941/51. Class 42 (1) Transverse seams are formed between two or more continuous, superimposed layers of thermoplastic film, particularly polythene, by passing them from a feed roller past a tensioning roller or bar to a take-off roller. interrupting at intervals the passage of the film layers and, while the film is stationary, bringing the film layers at the tensioning roller or bar and, a substantially linear radiant heating element into such juxtaposition relative to one another, and holding them in juxtaposition for such a period that the layers become, sealed together across their width without contact of the heating element with the film, the tension of the film in, the seaming region being increased for the duration of the heat-sealing step by displacement of the stationary film relative to the tensioning .roller or bar at each side thereof. As shown, superimposed layers of film 1, which may be a single length of tubular film in flattened form, pass between a feed roller and a take-off roller over a tensioning,bar 2 extending across the width of the film and supported on a cooled steel plate. Movement of the film is interrupted at set intervals and an electrically-heated bar 4, insulated in a support 5, is lowered, together with two cooled steel blocks 6, under spring loading so that when bar 4 reaches its closest approach to the film blocks 6 press the film against plate 3 and thereby increase the tension of the film over bar 2. When the film below bar 4 has softened sufficiently under radiant heat for a seam to be formed, the bar and blocks are raised and the film is moved into position for the next seam. The apparatus may be modified so that bar 4 is held stationary while the film is moved towards it by movement of bar 2; or the means for displacing the film may be adapted for horizontal. as well as vertical movement so that they press. the film against the sides of bar 2 during seaming.
