Abstract

1,012,963. Perforating thermoplastic sheets. T. J. SMITH & NEPHEW Ltd. Sept. 17, 1962 [June 21, 1961], No. 22518/61. Heading B5A. A film of thermoplastic material 11 runs over the surface of a rotating hollow metal cylinder 7, the surface having indentations, and the tip 23 of a flame 22 is applied to the moving film to melt the material over the indentations, but not the material backed by solid metal, to form a perforated film. The cylinder is water cooled and the film under slight tension. In an alternative embodiment, a rotating cylinder cooperates with an endless metal band which bears the indentations, and the film and band pass together over the cylinder while a flame plays on the film. Over a thousand perforations per square inch may be made. Specification 851,473 is referred to.
