Abstract

642,035. Tubes. A.T.F;, Inc. July 3, 1947, No. 17561. [Class 99(ii)] Apparatus for making convolute wound tubing from sheet material, such as aluminium foil coated or laminated with vinyl ester resins, cellulose acetate &c., "Cellophane" (Registered Trade Mark), or paper coated with thermoplastic, comprises a pair of side frames in which are journalled a mandrel 3 and rollers 4, 5 cooperating therewith, and a pair of rollers 6, 7, one of which may be heated, mounted on a pair of plates 13 pivoted to the frames at 14, whereby either roller 6 or 7 may be shifted to winding position opposite the mandrel. The mandrel may be very slightly tapered, encased in a slotted guide tube and collapsable. The pivot shaft 14 of the lower rollers is mounted on a stirrup 15 urged upwardly by a spring 17. Either roller may be held in operative position by a spring 29 coacting with a lever arm 28 mounted on the shaft 14 and located selectively against stops 30, 30<SP>1</SP>. All the rollers are driven from a power pulley 23, the upper ones by a belt 22 and the lower by a belt 27 driven from the loose double pulley 21. In operation the tubing is preferably first formed by cold rollers and then the heated roller is brought into operation and the tube heat-sealed.
