Abstract
462,458. Cork &c. tubes. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. June 4, 1935, No. 16200. Convention date, Oct. 30, 1934. [Class 99 (ii)] A cork &c. tube, for use more particularly as a cot for a textile roll, is made by winding helically, into tubular form a strip S of cork composition having a slow-setting adhesive applied to at least one of its longitudinal edges, urging the edges of the cork strip into firm abutting engagement, and forming a confining tube of paper &c. about the cork tube to hold the edges of the latter together until the adhesive therebetween has set. The confining tube preferably comprises a helically-wound paper strip 55 jointed by a strip 60 of adhesive paper disposed over the abutting edges thereof ; alternatively, the strip is wrapped with its edges overlapping, adhesive being applied to the overlapped portions. A suitable tube forming machine, Fig. 10, comprises a stationary mandril 2, an endless belt 4 which is wrapped around the mandril in a helix 15 and serves to wind the several strips S, 55, 60 on to the mandril, and a spring-pressed sleeve 24 provided at its inner end with a surface 25 in the form of a half helix corresponding to the helix angle of the wound cork strip. The belt 4 is mounted on two pulleys 5, 6 and is driven by a motor through a pulley 7, the pulleys 5, 6 being carried by supports 12, 13 which are slidably mounted on base plates 14, 14<1> so that the tension of the belt may be adjusted, and the complete mechanism is secured to a support 22 which is rotatably mounted in a base 23 whereby the pitch of the helix 15 may be varied. The helix 15 of the belt is arranged to have a pitch less than that of the wound cork strip so that the latter is retarded during winding and urged rearwardly against the surface 25 of the sleeve 24, the sleeve 24 reacting to compress the tube being formed and force the abutting edges of the cork strip into close contact. The cork strip is fed to the mandril from a roll 49, adhesive being applied to one edge from a feed 50 and, if desired, to the other edge from a feed 43 on the sleeve 24, and the confining and adhesive strips 55, 60 are fed from rolls 56, 61 respectively through a tensioning device 57 and past a moistening device 62. A base strip 45 of oilcoated paper is preferably applied to the mandril before the cork strip, and a securing strip 51 of adhesive paper from a roll 52 may be applied to the helical joint of the cork tube before formation of the confining tube. The sleeve 24 is provided with a hold-down plate 27 and finger 30 to urge the cork strip into contact with the mandril. Specifications 409,959, [Group IX], and 462,457 are referred to.
