Abstract

262,231. Schlesinger, G. Oct. 27, 1925. Bending; ply wood sheets. - Cylindrical articles of ply-wood are made from a band which has been previously obtained by joining strips endwise with the grain running longitudinally, and is then wound under tension. Crossing of the fibres in the finished article is produced by winding one or more bands helically, as for example in a cablewinding machine, or by inserting cross strips as the winding proceeds. In a machine for winding according to the latter method, the band is led from a drum 1 across the machine bed 1<a> and wound on a drum 9, the end being clamped between two eccentric rollers 13. The drum 1 is braked by a brake band 7 to maintain tension on the veneer band, and is provided with handdriven gearing 4 to tighten up the band at starting. The drum 9 is hollow and is detachably mounted on a plate at one end. Longitudinal eccentrically-mounted supporting rods 14 are arranged inside the drum, which is driven by a drop worm 17, flexible connection 18 and bevel gearing 19. The cross strips are cut by a. hand or foot-operated cutter 44 from a second band drawn from a drum 40, through gluing rolls 42 up to a stop 43. A clamp for holding the wound veneer is shown in Fig. 10, and comprises a perforated steel band 36 provided with extensions 37 adapted to engage holes 26 in the veneer band. Hooks 38 are adapted to engage a link 39 at the other end of the clamp, mounted on a clamping lever 39<a>. The holes 26 are punched by a hand operated punch 25, the operation of which can only take place in one position of a disc 30, which is geared to rotate with the drum 9. The veneer band after clamping is cut off by a knife 35, and the drum with the clamped article detached. Heated rollers may be arranged to press the band on to the surface of the drum 9 during winding, and the drum itself may be heated internally by steam or otherwise.
