Abstract
471,985. Backed veneers. REIMANN, O. March 23, 1936, No. 8628. Convention date, March 22, 1935. [Class 140] [Also in Groups XXIII and XXII] In the manufacture of backed veneers a thin veneer is peeled off a tree continuously in an extremely thin layer of which the thickness is approximately 0À1 mm., is wound into a roll and is then secured to a continuously fed backing carrying a thin layer of adhesive, whereupon the united continuous band is passed over or through a drying device and, preferably after calendering and trimming of the lateral edges, is removed in the form of sheets or rolls. In the backing operation, the paper supply roll 15, Fig. 2, is mounted on a spindle 16 braked by a brake block 17 to tension the paper band 18 which passes around a guide roller 19 and then over a table 24 where it is combined with veneer from the roll 14; the backed veneer passes around guide roller 25, drying drum 26 provided with electrical heating resistance heaters 27, and finally around guide roller 28. Adhesive is applied to the paper band 18 by a roller 20, the bottom of the adhesive container 21 being formed by said roller 20 and a non-rotatable roller 22 adjustable by a micrometer screw 23 to regulate the outlet gap for the adhesive. In a modification, Fig. 3, sheet glue is used, being drawn from a roll 35 over a guide roller 36 and combined with veneer from the roll 14 and paper from the roll 15 in a device comprising belts 29, 30 passing over rollers 34; rollers 33 press the lower run of the belt 29 on to the table 32 situated below the upper run of the belt 30 and provided with electric resistance heaters 31. The calender, provided in conjunction with the drying drum comprises rollers 38, 39, 40, Fig. 4, mounted in ball bearings in a frame 37 ; the lower roller 40 is driven by a motor 41 through worm 42, worm wheel 43 and gearing 44, 45, 46, 47. The web passes around the rollers 38, 39 and thence through a cutting chest 48, coinprising circular knives 50, 51 which trim the edges and rollers 52, 53 for tensioning the web during the cutting operation, and is then wound on a roller 49. The cutting knives are driven from the gear-wheel 47 through gear-wheel 54 ; the spindle of the latter carries a roller 55 around which passes a belt 56 tensioned by a roller 57 and engaging the roller 49 whereby the latter is rotated. In a modification. the web is divided by a transverse cutter into sheets which are collected in a box. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 72/92, [Class 145], and 200,425, [Class 145 (ii)].
