Cigarettes and cheroots ; tobacco.- A continuous strip of material for the wrappers of cigarettes, cigarillos, and the like is made by cutting tobacco leaves into strips, pressing them to give a paper-like character, and joining them by means of adhesive preferably contained in a moistening bath through which the leaves are passed. In the apparatus shown, the cut-up leaves are placed at d on an endless belt b and are carried between the belts a, b through baths h, i of liquid, which may contain an adhesive. On leaving the belts a, b, they pass between belts l, v and pressing rollers p - - u and over heated rollers u, n, and the resulting web is wound on a spindle z. The belts i, v are of metal, the belt v passing between fluted rollers w and the resulting corrugations being pressed out by the rollers p, q, this operation exerting a stretching action on the fibres of the leaves. The corrugations may be transverse, longitudinal, crossed, or zig-zag, and the band l may be similarly corrugated when thick leaves are employed.
