Abstract
352,049. Absorbent pads. WILLIAMS, H. R., 141, East 81st Street. New York, U.S.A. March 27, 1930, No. 9772. Conven.. tion date, April 10. 1929. [Class 81 (ii).] In an apparatus for manufacturing absorbent pads of the kind consisting of an easily disintegrated filling contained in a gauze wrapper fibrous material is supplied from two separate chambers and is drawn out therefrom to form two sheets which are to be superimposed, a deodorizing powder is applied to the inner face of one sheet followed by a layer of mucilage, a strip of gauze is interposed between the sheets and they are then pressed together, wrapped in a covering of paper water. proofed on one face of the pad and cut into lengths which are wrapped in an outer cover of gauze &c. Fibrous material is supplied to chambers 2, 2a separated by an adjustable partition 3a and is drawn by suction applied at 1, 1a against travelling bands 6, 6a of wire gauze by which it is conveyed through orifices on to upper and lower sheets, the upper sheet being supported by a plate 20a. Deodorizing powder is applied to the lower sheet from a box 21 and starch paste from a nozzle 19. A sheet of gauze 16 is led from the reel 15 between the layers of fibre which are led between rollers 22, 23 to a table 24 over which one or more plies of paper are led by a conveyer belt 34 from reels 27, 27a. Before passing to the table the paper is treated with a water-proofing material applied by rolls 82, 83, 87 to that part of the paper which will be overlapped in the subsequent folding operation which is effected by folders of known type. The compound sheet enclosed in the folded paper wrapping is carried forward by intermittently operated conveyer belts 43, 43a so that during the stationary periods so produced the sheet may be severed by a device 46, 47 which cuts out parts so as to leave a series of separate pads with curved ends. These pads are then wrapped by a known folding device in gauze supplied from a reel 55, the wrapped pads are separated by a knife 65, 66 and the open ends are folded by suitable means. In a modified apparatus the web feeding and starch applying devices are so arranged that starch is applied on the under face of the gauze 16. The pad produced by the apparatus is of the form shown in Fig. 8 and produces the outer gauze wrapper 63, inner and outer webs 39, 40 of the inner wrapper of cellulose sheet, a strip 16 of reinforcing gauze and the two layers 20, 20a of wood pulp.
