415,331. Unpacking. PACKAGE MACHINERY CO., 132, Birnie Avenue, Spring- field, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Feb. 7, 1934, No. 4010. Convention date, Feb. 28, 1933. [Class 94 (i).] In a machine for making packet wrappers provided with tearing strips a web w of wrapping material is fed by rollers 24, 25 from a roll 22 beneath an intermittently actuated perforating punch 30 which forms a line of spaced perforations in the web nearer one longitudinal edge. A tape-like tearing strip t is drawn from a reel 23 through an electrically heated wax tank 71 and meets the perforated web w at a guide roller 56 and is united thereto along the line of perforations. The composite strip S now passes under a cooling tank 95 and is drawn by feed rollers 101, 102 past an intermittently actuated cutting mechanism 110, 113, 103 which severs the web transversely along a broken line c, Fig. 10, adjacent each aperture p, the tearing strip being severed above the apertures in the web and along a line d in advance of the line of severance of the web whereby the end of the tearing strip projects from an edge of the now completed wrapper. The wrapper is next passed through guides to meet the goods a to be wrapped and then to the wrapping mechanism proper. A strip s of wax may be applied across the web adjacent each line of severance by means of the mechanism 98, Fig. 1. In the form shown in Fig. 21, the perforations in the web are replaced by zig-zag cuts m having long limbs and the tearing strip is secured to the web by wax applied only at the points n.
