Abstract
1463042 Laminated diapers; seaming non-metallic sheet material RIEGEL TEXTILE CORP 15 April 1975 [15 April 1974 24 July 1974 25 July 1974 (2)] 15506/75 Headings B5N and B5K [Also in Divisions A5-A6] A disposable diaper comprises a fluid-permeable top sheet 15 and a fluid-impermeable bottom sheet 19 enclosing a fluid-absorbent pad and being secured together along their transverse edges by short transversely-spaced glue lines 21. The absorbent pad may comprise a fibrous bath 16 disposed between two of a number of cellulose wadding sheets 17 and held in position by embossing lines 18. The sheet 19 may be folded over the edge of the sheet 15 and secured thereto by longitudinal glue lines 20. In a preferred method of manufacture, the sheets 17 are forwarded with their edges maintained in alginment by devices 48 with sensors 49. The lowermost sheet 17 is fed through a chamber 52 in which a wet-pressed pulp fibre sheet 51 is formed into individual fibres so disclosed in Specification 1,443,296 and deposited by vacuum on to the sheet 17. The conveyer belt 58 is formed with a pattern of perforations so that the fibres are deposited as a series of batts 16. The embossing lines 18 are formed between collars 71 on rolls 69, 70. The assembly is perforated between individual batts 16 by a serrated knife 82 and an anvil 83 on rolls 80, 81 and is drawn to form individual pads by overfed rollers 85, 86. The pads are fed between the sheets 15, 19, the latter having been intermittently coated with series of short glue lines 21 by an extrusion head 90 comprising a plate with extrusion ports spaced along one edge. The head is connected by a conduit 92 to a source 93 and is caused to operate intermittently by a pump 95 whose mechanism is activated at spaced intervals by including a one-way clutch in a drive system which includes a reciprocating rack-and-pinion gear. The combined sheets are pressed by a roller 119 and sheet 19 is folded over sheet 15 by folding blades 120 after the application of glue lines 20 by heads 121, the adhesive supply being controlled by a pump 125. The assembly is pressed by a roller 140 and the tabs 151 are applied. The edges are folded inwardly around a plate 157 and then outwardly around inwardlytapering guide bars 160. Guide bars 162 fold tabs 151. The folded assembly is pressed between rollers 165 and 166 and severed by a knife 172 and an anvil 173 on rollers 170 and 171. The finished diapers are folded by a blade 184 and passed downwardly between belts 180 and 181 to a device for successively receiving the diapers, and counting and separating a predetermined number thereof. The above apparatus features are described in greater detail with reference to Figs. 5-24 (not shown). The top sheet 15 may comprise flat collapsedcellular regenerated cellulose fibres bonded at contact points (see U.S.A. Specification 3,171,773).
