To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. KINsLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Reading, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Extractors, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
My invention relates to apparatus for treating fibrous material, such as wool, shoddy or the like in its raw state or when woven into a cloth, and particularly but not exclusively is concerned with extraction apparatus for removing water from such material.
My invention will be best understood from the following descriptionand accompanying drawings of specific embodiments of invention selected for illustrative purposes, while the scope of my invention will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Fig. l indicates diagrammatically an apparatus for subjecting cloth to suction.
Fig. 2 is a detail of Fig.1 on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic representation of my invention applied for treating fibrous material in the raw state Referring to Fig.1 and to the preferred embodiment of one type of my invention, I have indicated at 1 a strip of cloth which is being fed from the roll 2 over a conduit 3, the guide pulleys 1 and the tension pulley 5 serving to maintain the proper tension on the cloth.
In the treatment of cloth, it is often necessary to subject the cloth'to the action of water, which may be done as will be understood by those skilled in the art, at some place on the strip intermediate'the roll 2 and conduitb. At the conduit 3 the water is removed from the cloth by subjecting the cloth to suction.
To this end the conduit is provided with an orifice 6 in the form of a longitudinally extending slot of length suflicient toreach across the width of the strip. The interior of the conduit 3 is connected to any suitable means for creating suction, for example,

to an exhaust blower. For holding the cloth against the orifice I provide a presser roll 7. In order that the presser roll may automatically adjust itself to irregularities in the thickness of the cloth the presser roll is made up in the form of a plurality of narrow disks 8 which are in contact with each other and divide the disk into a plurality of relatively movable sections. These disks, which may be of any suitable material, as for example, bronze, are each provided with an axial perforation 9 through which extends a rod 10, the rod as will be obvious limiting the relative movement between the disks. At opposite ends the rod is carried by a fixed part of the apparatus.
Any suitable means may beprovided for holding the disks in contact as for example a flange at each end of the rod one of which is shown at 11.
In Fig. 1 I have illustrated an arrangement for subjecting raw fibrous material, such as wool or shoddy to suction, which may be done for example, for the purpose of removing water or other liquid from such material.
Referring to Fig. 4, I have shown a conduit 8 having the longitudinal slot 6 and passing over the slot 6 in contact with the conduit I have shown a belt conveyor 12 of pervious construction, for example, loosely woven cloth. The conveyor 12 is supported on pulleys 13, one of which as will be obvious may be driven to cause the conveyor to progress.
Above the left hand pulley 13 I mountin any suitable manner a pulley 14 over which passes a conveyor 15. The conveyor 15 has associated therewith any suitable mechanism or it leads fromany suitable instrumentality either of which will act to cause the fibrous material to take the form of a sheet 17 when it leaves the conveyor 15. As will be obvious the conveyor 15 places the fibrous material on the conveyor 12.
For pressing the fibrous material and the pervious conveyor 12 against the orifice 6 I may employ a presser roll 7 similar to that described in connection with Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
1 It will be understood that I have disclosed apparatus for subjecting sheets of fibrous material both in the raw and fabricated state to suction and further tha l have disclosed a presser roll which is constructed to provide a cylindrical surface for pressing the fibrous material toward the orifice and that this surface is constituted by the peripheries of the relatively movable disks 8, which results in the portions of the surface longitudimilly of the roll being relatively movable to each other diametrically ot the roll.
Although I have described for purpose of illustration several speriiic embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I am not li d thereby to the particular details and arrangement of parts of these embodiments but that wide deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Claims:
l. In an apparatus for extracting liquid from fibrous material, a liquid extracting member or instrumentality over which material is fed, and a presser roll having relatively movable sections for holding said material against said member.
2. In an apparatus for extracting liquid from fibrous material, a liquid extracting member or instrumentality over which material is fed, a presser roll for forcing said material against said member, and said presser roll being constructed to provide a surface the portions of which longitudr nally of said presser roll are movable relatively to each other diametrically of said roll.
7. In app ratus for extracting liquid from fibrous material, a presser roll having a plurality of disks relatively movable to eachother, said disks having axial perfo rations, and a rod loosely passing through said perforations and means providing a suction orifice towa d which the material is pressed by said disks.
8. In apparatus for extracting liquid from fibrous material a presser roll having a plurality of disks relatively movable to each other, said disks having axial perforations, and a retaining means loosely pass ing through said perforations and means providing a suction orifice toward which the material is pressed by said disks.
9. In an apparatus for extracting liquid from fibrous material, a presser roll having a plurality of disks relatively movable to each other, and means for limiting the en:- tent of such relative movement and means providing a suction orifice toward which the material is pressed by said disks.
10. In an apparatus for subjecting sheet material to suction, means providing a suction orifice over which said sheet material may be fed, a presser roll in contact with said sheet for holding said sheet against said orifice, and saidpresser roll being constructed to provide a surface the portions oi which longitudinally of said presser rollare movable relatively to each other diametricallyof said roll.
11. In an apparatus for subjecting sheet material to suction, feeding means, suction means providing a slot, said feeding means providing for the feeding of said material over said slot in a direction transverse to the direction of said slot, and apresser roll above said slot and resting upon said material, said presser roller comprising a plurality of closely adjacent disks so mounted as to be movable relatively to each other diametrically of said presser roll.
12. In an apparatus for subjecting sheet material to suction, feeding means, suction means providing a slot, said feeding means providing for the feeding of said material over said slot in a direction transverse to the direction of said slot, a presser roll above said slot and resting upon said material, said presser roll comprising a plurality of closely adjacent disks each of which has an axial perforation, and a rod or the like passing through said perforation and positioned to permit relative movement of said disks diametrically of said presser roll.
13. In an apparatus for subjecting sheet material to suction, means providing a suction orifice over which said sheet material may be drawn, and means for holdingthe material against said orifice and so constructed as to adjust itself; automatically to irregularities in thickness of said sheet material.
14. In apparatus for treating wool or other fibrous material, means providing a suction orifice, a per-vious conveyor for carrying said fibrous material over said orifice, and a presser roll resting upon said material above said orifice.
15. In apparatus for treating wool or other fibrous material, means providing a suction orifice, a pervious conveyor for carrying said fibrous material over said orifice, and means for pressing said fibrous material and said pervious conveyor against said orifice.
16. In apparatus for treating wool or other fibrous material, means providing a suction orifice, a pervious conveyor for carrying said fibrous material over said orifice, and a presser roll so constructed as to adjust itself automatically to the thickness of said fibrous material and resting upon said material above said orifice.
17 In an apparatus for extracting liquid from a sheet of fibrous material, means providing a suction orifice over which said sheet of fibrous material is passed, a pervious sheet between said means providing a suction orifice and sheet of fibrous material, and a presser roll opposite said means providing a suction orifice and resting upon said sheet of fibrous material.
18. In an apparatus for extracting liquid from a sheet of fibrous material, means providing a suction orifice over which said sheet of fibrous material is passed, a pervio-us sheet between said means providing a sucfibrous material.

In a liquid extracting apparatus, a pervious sheet passing over a suction means extending transversely of said sheet, a presscr device positioned opposite said suction means, and said presser device being automatically and variably adjustable throughout its length in a direction normal to said pervious sheet.
