Abstract

715,845. Paper &c. tubes. SCHECHNER, P., and ROLEX PAPER CO., Ltd. Feb. 19, 1953 [Feb. 21, 1952], No. 4624/52. Class 99 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A tubular container e.g., for protecting glass tubes, is formed of two or more strips 1, 2 of paper, cardboard or the like wound helically in superposed surface contact and secured together by an adhesive, and has an internal, helical, deformable and elastic rib 3, e.g., of string, cord, felt or wadding, projecting inwards from the inner surface of the innermost of the strips 1, 2 and adapted to yield in the radial direction. The tube may be made on a. fixed mandrel 4, Fig. 5, provided with a helical groove 5 of uniform width and preferably of semi-circular or arcuate cross-section, a strip 1 of uniform width approximately equal to the axial distance between the adjacent turns of the groove 5 being given a few turns 10 about the mandrel before being embraced by a flat belt 6 looped at 9 about the mandrel 4 and supported by pulleys 7, 8 one of which is driven, the turns 10 lying between the turns of the groove 5. A circular-section rope 3 of elongated bundles of folded, corrugated or twisted strips of paper or of cellulose wadding enclosed in a circumferentially corrugated paper sheath is led into the groove 5 at a point 11 preceding the application to the mandrel of the strip 1 and given a few turns 12 about the mandrel and between the edges of the adjacent turns of the strip 1, and a strip 2 of greater width than the strip 1 and coated on one side with adhesive is led onto the mandrel at a point 13 between the point 10 of application of the strip 1 and the loop 9 of the belt 6 and given one or more turns 14 about the strip 1 and the rope 3. Under the pressure of the loop 9 the tube is fed off the mandrel in the form of a continuous tube to be cut into lengths by a saw. The width of the strip 2 is preferably such as to provide a butt joint between adjacent turns of the strip, and further strips may be helically wound over the strip 2. In a modification, Figs. 6 to 9 (not shown), a freely rotatable roller arranged so that the peripheral edge of the roller engages in a part of the groove 5, presses a groove in the wall of the tube to form a helical rib.
