Abstract
1,131,419. Container closures; portable containers. GLASWERKE GROSSRASCHEN VEB. 16 Dec., 1965, No. 53549/65. Headings B8D and B8T. A closure for a preserving jar 14 having a peripheral bead 12 comprises a lid 3 in which a sealing ring or sealing compound 13 is placed, the sealing surface 2 of the rim 1 of the jar forming a zone of a sphere and co-operating with a sealing surface 4 of the lid. An annular groove 8 has an upper wall 9 which makes an angle of not less than 45 degrees with a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the jar, the groove being shaped in this manner to prevent splintering of the lid when an opening tool is inserted in the groove. Grooves 11 in the lid and 10 in the rim of the jar assist in making a vacuum tight joint. The lid is made of glass but in a modification a metal lid forms a mechanical closure for the jar, however the metal lid may be adapted to form a vacuum closure. The lids may also be made of plastics material.
